What I’ve learned from 40+ conversations with tech leaders

💬 A Moment That Stuck With Me

A few weeks ago, I wrapped up a call with a senior engineering manager who had just inherited a larger, more complex team after a reorg.

As we closed the conversation, she paused and said:

“Honestly, this was cathartic. I didn’t realize how much I needed this.”

I’ve heard versions of that same comment again and again:
Managers thanking me for the space to just talk.
Real conversations about the weight they’re carrying.

I started these calls to better understand what today’s tech industry leaders are facing.
What I didn’t expect was how emotionally resonant they’d become, or how often people would leave feeling lighter, just from having the space to speak freely.

🔍 What I’ve Been Hearing

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the privilege of speaking with dozens of managers and senior leaders across tech.

To everyone who has taken the time: thank you.
Your honesty, thoughtfulness, and generosity in sharing your stories has stayed with me.

Each call has left me more grateful, more inspired, and more committed to supporting managers like you.

📌 Common Threads That Emerged

1. The Weight of Leadership

Many shared feelings of isolation, and the relentless pressure of balancing team needs with organizational expectations.

2. A Craving for Authentic Connection

People weren’t looking for advice. They were looking for a place to be real.
To talk about fears, frustrations, and hopes without judgment, and hear from others navigating similar moments.

3. Relief in Being Heard

To my surprise (and delight), several managers described these calls as emotionally relieving.
That alone tells me how badly we need more honest, supportive spaces for those leading through change.

⚡️ What Surprised Me Most

Some managers admitted, often quietly, to questioning their place in leadership.

“Is this really for me?”

Here’s the truth:
People leadership is a skill. It can be learned, practiced, and grown into.

Not one person I spoke with lacked the potential to lead well.
They just lacked support.

My hope is that no one walks away from leadership out of self-doubt.
Instead, I hope they find the tools, language, and confidence to grow into it.

Others spoke about the emotional whiplash of constant change:
Shifting priorities. Unclear expectations. Mounting pressure.
They felt left to figure it out alone, with little guidance on how to lead through the fog.
